Can I add Ethernet to a serial-only POS printer?
Often yes — most Epson, Star and Bixolon thermal printers have an interface slot on the back that accepts an Ethernet or WiFi card. The card slots in and is recognized by the printer's firmware automatically. Confirm your printer's manual lists 'interface card slot' as a feature before ordering.
What's the difference between TCP-spool and direct-IP printing?
TCP-spool means the printer is queued through Windows Print Spooler over a TCP port — the standard for most retail apps. Direct-IP (raw TCP/9100) bypasses the spooler for lower latency and is preferred for high-volume printing. Both work over the same Ethernet interface card; configuration is on the host side.
Do these cards need their own power?
No — POS interface cards draw power from the host device through the card-slot connector. They are typically low-current (under 1W) and the host's PSU is more than adequate.
How do I configure a newly installed Ethernet card?
Most cards default to DHCP, so plug into your network and they pick up an IP automatically. To set a static IP, use the host printer's built-in network config menu (printed self-test ticket often shows the assigned IP), then access the card's web admin in a browser.
